A Chaos Campaign Guide to Northwind

“Surrounded by the Enemy…

In the 32nd Century, the Republic of the Sphere is beset on all sides, its enemies seeking the most important weapon in the Inner Sphere: interstellar communication. As the forces of the Capellan Confederation advance toward the heart of the crumbling Republic, they are laser-focused on the one goal that will give them the upper hand and help destroy the Republic once and for all: the planet of Northwind.

Homeworld of the famed Northwind Highlanders mercenaries, Northwind represents not only the site of a century-old betrayal, but it boasts the only working hyperpulse generator along the line of the Confederation’s advance. Sang-shao Lindsey Baxter and the Fourth McCarron’s Armored Cavalry have been tasked with taking Northwind at all costs, and the besieged Republic is unable to lend further support to the defending XII Hastati Sentinels. Northwind will be easy pickings, and other sharks smell blood in the water. The Highlanders’ honor remains strong, but will it be enough to survive the coming storm?”

Historical Update

Northwind

Republic of the Sphere

19 November 3150

“Citizens, we stand here on the cusp of an auspicious day! Not only do we have the opportunity to strike back at Stone’s Republic, but we can administer a lesson on loyalty that has been decades in the making.”

Gao-shiao-zhang Jiang Hui, in a message to Task Force Clarity

[Excerpt From: Michael J. Ciaravella. “BattleTech: Grey Watch Protocol: The Highlander Covenant, Book One.]

After the devastation of the Jihad, the surviving Northwind Highlanders joined Devlin Stone’s new Republic of the Sphere. In a pact between the Highlander Clan Elders and Devlin Stone, called the Highlander Covenant, the Highlanders vowed to support and defend the Republic. In return, Devlin Stone would ensure the Highlander Clans claim to their ancestral home on Northwind. Many of the Highlanders BattleMechs were decommissioned as part of Stone’s Swords to Plowshares initiative. The remaining forces were rolled into the Republic of the Sphere XII Hastati Sentinels.

On Gray Monday in 3132, the majority of the InnerSphere’s HPG stations were destroyed, either by malfunctions or by unknown covert military forces. The HPG on Northwind was mysteriously unaffected. Even a task force of ComStar Adepts led by Bianca Haller working on the HPG was unable to determine why. During the chaos that followed Gray Monday, Tara Campbell and the Northwind Highlanders honored their pledge to defend Terra from Anastasia Kerensky and the Steel Wolves.

In 3150, the Capellan Confederation were ready to begin Operation Clarity, their final march towards Terra. Daoshen Liao assemble a force consisting of units from Warrior House Imarra (Under the command of Grand Master Gao-shiao-zhang Jiang Hui), the Fourth McCarron’s Armoured Cavalry (Under the command of Sang-shao Lindsey Baxter), and a regiment of the First Canopian Lances (under the command of Colonel Valeria Centrella-Tompkins). Their first target, Northwind.

Devlin Stone, former Exarch of the Republic of the Sphere, and recently awoken from cryostasis, had predicted this move by the Capellan’s and while he couldn’t spare any more forces from behind the Fortress Republic, he did dispatch the Highlander Knight, Lady Maeve Stirling, to warn and prepare the defenders of Northwind.

“From a strategic standpoint, this planet’s working HPG makes you an ideal target, even if the Capellans had somehow forgotten how much they hate us for all that they lost in the Fourth Succession War. When you combine the two, I have no doubt the temptation has finally proven irresistible.”

-Lady Maeve Stirling, Knight of the Republic of the Sphere

[Excerpt From: Michael J. Ciaravella. “BattleTech: Grey Watch Protocol: The Highlander Covenant, Book One.].

The Capellan Forces split into two forces. Warrior House Imarra and the mercenary company Laurel’s Legion attacked Fort Barret on the northern continent of New Lanmark. The Fourth McCarron Cavalry and the Canopian Lancers led the assault on three major targets, the Northwind Military Academy, the city of Tara and the seat of power for the Highlanders, Castle Northwind. Out of all of these targets, the first priority was to secure the HPG compound in Tara.

The Capellan forces outnumbered the XII Histati Sentinels 3 to 1, but as the Highlanders prepared to make their final stand, a mysterious signal was sent from Castle Northwind – “Activate the Grey Watch Protocol.”… and then the BagPipes began to play….

Track – Grey Watch ProtoCol

Situation

“The Operation Clarity tasks force has three objectives. Secure the McNamara Military Academy (NMA), secure the HPG Compound, and finally, secure Castle Northwind. We will divide our forces between the first two objectives, and once these are secure, we shall isolate and take the Castle.

Mask intelligence has revealed the existence of secret tunnels which lead from nearby the NMA and Tara into Castle Northwind. If our forces can secure these entrances we can gain access into the Castle as well as cutting off the retreat of the Northwind forces.”

Sang-shao Lindsey Baxter

Game Setup

Place 9 maps in a 3 x 3 grid. The Northern most map should be Grasslands Forward Base and represents Castle Northwind. The Eastern most map should be a City Tech map or other urban map with a variety of buildings (most of which should be heavy reinforced warehouses [CF90], while some are light civillian structures [CF15], including a walled compound containing the HPG array (Hardened Level 3 Stucture 9 Hexes [CF120]). The Western maps should be the River ComCenter which represents the Northwind Military Academy.

Place three WayPoint counter at the center the maps containing the NMA, Castle Northwind and HPG Centre.

Place two secret tunnel entrance markers, one on the NE map and one on the NW map. Units may move between the Northwind Castle and this point using normal movement without being targeted by enemy units (unless both are in the tunnel)
